The countenance of silent persons looks better, than the parted lips of those individuals who are ever ready to announce something on any topic, any time, in any situation. Listeners are respected everywhere; glib takers get selective reception! Though listening is a great skill, especially for the public relations people, this is one of the neglected segments of the communication skills. Formal training courses are available and diplomas are awarded for reading, writing and speaking—but not for listening! You see workshops and conferences arranged for all types of communication skills, except listening! One can be forced to write, read or speak. But one can’t be forced to listen. Listening is a mind function, though we suppose that it is primary job of two ears. Research results have proved that listening skills suffer with age. â€Å"Ralph G. Nichols, long-time professor of rhetoric at the University of Minnesota (now retired), says in his book Are You Listening? --that "if we define the good listener as one giving full attention to the speaker, first-grade children are the best listeners of all." This has been due to a number of factors, all affecting the industry in a negative manner at the same time. This has resulted in low profits and poor performance. The decline in the industry sharply increased after the terrorist attacks on the United States, increasing the urgency to clearly identify the causes of the problems faced and to find any solutions available to overcome them. One of the factors contributing to the poor performance has been the global economic slowdown whose effect has not been limited to the airline industry but has extended to many other industries. The effect of this economic slowdown on airlines has been to cause a slowdown in air travel. The terrorist attacks on America have also done a great deal in causing a further decline in air travel, as consumers lose confidence in the airline industry, after fears of low security and becoming targets of terrorists. However, airlines have also been suffering from a number internal conflicts. The most important of these has been the recent bad relations they have had with pilots. I reasonably know many people who are constantly on social networking sites and updating pictures of their everyday life. For some reason, we care so much about other people's lives and what they are doing every second of the day. But I believe that we need to ask ourselves, â€Å"Is this even relevant to me? â€Å", â€Å"Does this help my life in any way? † I can completely relate to what this article is saying because I have also had these thoughts in my head. The one thing that most people will always bring when they go out somewhere is their phone. I use to feel naked if I didn't have my hone with me wherever I went.I had the tendency to constantly check on Backbone for my friends' updates and pictures. But the first time I had no choice but to leave my phone behind was when I went to Outdoor Science Camp in eighth grade. When I found out that we weren't allowed to bring our phones, I was completely lost and didn't Unguent 2 bare the thought of not having my phone with me. But when I was away from my phone and the internet, I felt more free and alive than I had in a long time. I forgot the feeling of Just living in the moment and not always having to show people online hat I was up to or to check on updates that were irrelevant to me.From then on, I limited myself from using my phone and going on the internet. Being away from all the advance technology that we have today is very difficult. L, myself, admit that I can not be away from my phone and the internet for a long time. But I believe that as long as you can keep your balance with your life and the technology around you, you will embrace the moments that you have with things that are much more important.
